An audio book is a recording of a text simply being read. A reading of the complete text is noted as "unabridged," while readings of a reduced version are labeled as "abridged." Spoken word books have been around since the 1930s and became popular in the eighties. The term "talking book" was coined during the 1930s when "book for the blind" programs gained in popularity.
Audio drama (sometimes called radio or audio theater) is a dramatized, purely acoustic performance, broadcast on the radio or published on CDs or MP3s. With no visual component whatsoever, radio drama depends on dialogue, music and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and story. Listening Breakthrough!
The newest genre in audio listening is Active Listening Audio Adventures. Active Listening Audio Adventures are audio dramas with fast-moving stories designed to keep the listener captivated by the story. Quickly paced and Plot-rich use of powerful sound effects makes this new listening format truly unique. Parents love it because it truly "captures" the imagination of children. Some describe it as 3-D sound effects.
At Heirloom Audio Productions, we are especially passionate about bringing real history to life. This inevitably means a bit of detective work as we try to figure out what actually happened in the story we’re attempting to tell.
Our task is further complicated by the fact that so much of what passes for any type of history today has been “sanitized” by secularists and is often beyond the point of historical recognition.
That said, our passion and love of history takes us to some amazing places and allows us to do some pretty unusual things as we sort out the details of a sometimes murky past.
Frankly, this is a lot of fun. But it’s also serious business and we don’t take what God has done for us in the past – our history – for granted. This is no small thing!
In fact, we feel that God requires us to truly go the extra mile and take our audio dramas to a new level of excellence. Our mission, simply stated… is to engage our listener’s imagination by taking them back in time and immersing them in the story.
With this in mind, the Heirloom Audio team traveled to Scotland to walk where William Wallace and Robert the Bruce walked in an effort to capture not only the action, but the essence of this epic story of freedom.
The short video below details just one “sample” effort our team made to help our listeners better “live the adventure”.
Can one man's faith and vision inspire a group of farmers, shepherds, and merchants to defeat the mightiest military force on the planet?
William Wallace, by his undaunted courage and strength of character, forever changed the history of Scotland. His stand against oppression—despite overwhelming odds—inspired the heroic leader who would eventually gain Scotland's freedom, King Robert the Bruce.
The source of Wallace's fire was his faith in God. He loved the Psalms and meditated on them daily. At his execution, Wallace had his psalter placed before him so he could read the Psalms as King Edward's men tortured him.
This is the untold account of Wallace and "The Bruce"— a story that continues to stir our hearts even today. A story that teaches us that true freedom is worth fighting for.
"They take G.A. Henty stories, which are full of history, excitement, and character building lessons, and turn them into action packed audio dramas. If you know what radio theater is, imagine that... but updated with the technology and actors of today. It's a lot of fun, and a great way to get kids and adults excited about learning history. G.A. Henty can be hard to read, but these dramas retell the story and bring it to life, and have encouraged my kids to read more of his books. I love that last bit SO much.
